Things to consider about Light Therapy for Hair Loss

– The correct dose and wavelength is crucial. Both too little and too much light give poor results.
– An FDA approved device is one that has been proven to actually work.
– Available devices are in-clinic devices, laser combs and brushes and helmets and caps.
-The only way to know that a device actually works is to check out clinical trial data.

Light therapy is now conventional therapy and a viable option. There is a large enough body of evidence to support the use of lasers and LEDs for thinning hair. The mechanism of action is unknown but the current evidence is that the effect of light in the red and infrared range is to boost energy production in the cells in the hair and scalp. As a result hair bulk and skin quality is increased.

The magnitude of the effect varies from person to person but two good quality studies show that an effective unit used for 30 minutes a day on four days a week will increase hair number by up to 35% and hair thickness by up to 20%.

The important factors affecting which device to buy are build quality, dose of red light energy and wavelength of light. If the wavelength is wrong or the incorrect amount of light energy is delivered then the device will not give the result. For this reason the FDA in the USA requires each device to undergo clinical trials to prove that it delivers the results it The best way to be sure that your unit will actually work is do buy a clinically proven, FDA approved device. There are three, the HairMax comb, the iGrow helmet and the Oaze helmet.
Currently the iGrow laser/LED helmet seems to offer the best value for money. You sit for 25 minutes every second day with the helmet on your head which is easier than combing for 25 minutes. The iGrow retails for $NZ899 vs $US1600 for the Oaze.

The Latest Hairmax Study

This study split up a group of 128 men and 141 women into four groups. Each group used a different laser comb or placebo device three days a week for 26 weeks. At the end of that time the Hairmax group as a whole grew 10% more hair than the placebo group. Link:

So What Are Your Options

So what should you do if you want to try light therapy? It is your decision but your options are:

1. Attend a laser clinic. Make sure that you attend 3 or 4 times a week. Each session lasts 20-40 minutes. Usual cost is $1800 to $2500 for 6-9 months.

2. Build your own laser device. Instructions are available at www.overmachogrande.com. Cost will probably be about $350-450 in NZ dollars. You need basic electrical skills including soldering to build one. Calibrate your device to ensure that you get 2-4 Joules of light energy per square cm of scalp.

3. Buy a device which is not clinically proven. You run the real risk of mediocre results as the dose of light energy delivered has not been validated. Both too little and too much energy are equally bad. Cheap internet devices also use the cheapest components and can be electrically dangerous.

4. Buy a Hairmax laser comb or similiar small handheld device. All laser. Priced around US$500. Combs and brushes can be more tedious to use than a helmet or hat device. Think of it like watering a garden and lawn during dry weather. A laser comb is like using a hose and a helmet device is like having a sprinkler system.

5. The iGrow laser helmet. US$695 plus shipping from the USA which converts to NZ$980 (including shipping in New Zealand) from our shop. Clinically proven in men and women and FDA approved.

6. The Oaze Korean laser/LED helmet. US$2,000. Clinically proven but results achieved were not as good as the iGrow in the clinical trials.
