WHAT IPL CAN HELP WITH
IPL is well suited to addressing a range of visible skin concerns, particularly those caused by sun exposure, pigment irregularity, and vascular changes in the skin. Common concerns include:
- Pigmentation and sun spots
- Uneven skin tone
- Redness, rosacea and visible capillaries
- Dull or tired-looking skin
- Signs of sun damage
- General skin rejuvenation and clarity
Your skin will be carefully assessed during consultation to determine whether IPL is appropriate for your skin type, concerns and desired outcome.

HOW IPL WORKS
IPL uses broad-spectrum light energy to target specific structures in the skin - including melanin (responsible for pigmentation) and haemoglobin (responsible for redness and visible vessels). The light is absorbed by these targets, breaking them down so the body can naturally clear them over time.
Unlike laser treatments which use a single wavelength, IPL uses multiple wavelengths in a single pulse, making it well suited to treating several concerns at once.
Results develop gradually as the skin processes the treated areas. Most patients experience visibly clearer, more even-looking skin within 2–4 weeks of treatment.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Your appointment begins with a thorough skin assessment and a discussion of your concerns and goals. Your practitioner will then determine whether IPL is the most appropriate treatment for you, and recommend a tailored approach.
During treatment, light-based energy is gently applied to the targeted areas. You may feel a warm, light flicking sensation on the skin — most patients describe it as comfortable rather than painful. Treatment time typically ranges from 20–45 minutes depending on the area treated.
After treatment, the skin may appear slightly flushed, and pigmented areas may temporarily darken before naturally shedding over 7–14 days. A series of treatments is often recommended to achieve optimal results - usually 3–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
Treatment time: Approximately 20–45 minutes
Downtime: Minimal - temporary redness and pigment shedding
Results: Visibly clearer, more even-looking skin within 2–4 weeks
Recommended: 3–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart

IS IPL RIGHT FOR YOU?
IPL is most effective on fair to medium skin tones and works best on pigmented or vascular concerns where there's clear contrast between the target and the surrounding skin.
IPL may not be suitable if you:
- Have a darker skin type (Fitzpatrick V–VI)
- Have recently had significant sun exposure or are actively tanned
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have certain medical conditions or take medications that affect skin sensitivity to light
Your practitioner will discuss your skin type, medical history and treatment goals during consultation to confirm IPL is the right approach. In some cases, an alternative skin treatment may be recommended.

WHY WINTER IS A POPULAR TIME FOR IPL
Winter and early spring are commonly recommended for IPL treatment courses. With less incidental sun exposure, it's easier to protect the skin before and after treatment — an important factor in achieving the best possible outcome and avoiding complications.
Many patients plan their IPL treatments through autumn and winter so their skin is refreshed, brightened and ready for the warmer months ahead.
Your practitioner will provide clear pre- and post-treatment guidance, including sun protection advice and any skincare adjustments needed around your appointments.

Common Questions
Most patients describe IPL as comfortable rather than painful. You may feel a warm, light flicking sensation on the skin during treatment. Your practitioner will check in with you throughout to ensure you're comfortable.
Downtime is minimal. The skin may appear slightly flushed for a few hours after treatment, and any treated pigmentation may temporarily darken before shedding naturally over 7–14 days. You can return to your day immediately, though we recommend avoiding sun exposure and using SPF 50+ for at least two weeks post-treatment.
Most patients see optimal results after a course of 3–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. The exact number depends on your skin, your concerns and the area being treated — your practitioner will confirm a personalised plan during your consultation.
Most patients see visible improvement within 2–4 weeks after their first session, with progressive improvement following each subsequent treatment. Results develop gradually as the skin processes the treated pigmentation and vascular concerns.
When performed by a trained clinician on suitable skin, IPL is a safe and well-established treatment. As with all light-based treatments, careful skin assessment, appropriate energy settings and proper aftercare are essential. Your practitioner will discuss any risks and contraindications during your consultation.
